EIU Academy of Lifelong Learning
The purpose of Eastern’s Academy of Lifelong Learning is to provide adults with educational opportunities that encourage connecting with people and organizations, learning about a variety of subjects, and pursuing a better understanding of our world. The Academy promotes self-directed learning that inspires participation in programs that appeal to individual interests. Members may audit full-semester EIU courses for comprehensive study with the Academy Pass. Our goal is to support learning through the growth of accessible, innovative programming. A historical impersonation of Elizabeth Keckley at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, in the Lone Elm Room at the Mattoon depot. Elizabeth Keckley, Mary Todd Lincoln's dressmaker (modiste) and confidante, was born into slavery in 1818 and became an extraordinary seamstress, civil activist and author. This first person impersonation will entertain, engage and educate people of all ages. Ms. Kathryn Harris of Springfield will deliver the performance with passion, experience and authenticity. This performance is planned by the Academy of Lifelong Learning, made possible by a grant from the Coles County Arts Council, and hosted by the Mattoon Arts Council in the Historic Mattoon Train Station, 1718 Broadway, Mattoon. The Lone Elm Room is located inside the Mattoon Train Depot.
Scheduling is managed by Tourism & Arts Office. The Mattoon Arts Council sponsored the the Ukulele group in its inception. An informal group session led by Gail Nelson continued and eventually went online with COVID restrictions.
