The Lebovitz Lively Arts Scholarship was created to provide college scholarships to one or more Mattoon graduates who major or will major in visual or performing arts. The scholarship was named in honor of Carl Lebovitz and James K. Lively, formerly of Mattoon. Lively worked as a freelance translator of many Slavic languages and was a patron of the arts during all of his adult life. Lebovitz, also a language translator, was a founding member of the Mattoon Arts Council & a patron of the arts throughout his life. Lebovitz died in 2009. The Lebovitz Lively Arts Scholarship has reached its seventh year of awarding scholarships to applicants who are graduates of Mattoon High School and major in the visual or performing arts.

5 MHS graduates receive Lebovitz Lively Arts Scholarship
A total of $10,000 was awarded from the Lebovitz Lively Arts Scholarship this year to Mattoon High School graduates majoring in visual or performing arts.
Five scholarships of $2,000 each were awarded to the following students: Shelby Barker, Kelly Cothern, Matt Etchison, Peyton Morrow and Gabriel Tomer. The scholarship was named in honor of Carl Lebovitz and James K. Lively, formerly of Mattoon. Lively worked as a freelance translator of many Slavic languages and was a patron of the arts during all of his adult life. He died in 1998. Lebovitz, also a language translator, was a founding member of the Mattoon Arts Council and a patron of the arts throughout his life. He participated in local theatrical productions over the years, and was the Journal Gazette & Times-Courier's arts reviewer-at-large for 30 years. Lebovitz died in 2009. The Lebovitz Lively Arts Scholarship has reached its sixth year of awarding scholarships to applicants who are graduates of Mattoon High School and major in the visual or performing arts. |
Shelby Barker (Class of 2014) is attending Southern Illinois University Carbondale majoring in interior design. Kelly Cothern (Class of 2017) will attend Lake Land College to pursue a degree in art. Matt Etchison (Class of 2016) is attending Northern Illinois University and is majoring in music education. Peyton Morrow (Class of 2017) will attend Webster University in the fall to pursue a degree in animation. Gabriel Tomer (Class of 2017) will attend Eastern Illinois University in the fall, majoring in music. Young Artist Awards announced
The Mattoon Arts Council sponsored its second Young Artist Awards, which were presented to several Mattoon students who demonstrate a talent and enthusiasm for the visual arts. Recipients were chosen by their art teachers and were sent home for the summer with an art bag full of supplies chosen for them by their teachers. Four students from Riddle Elementary School, four from Williams, six from Mattoon Middle School and one from Mattoon High School were honored with the Young Artist Award this school year. Special thanks to art teachers Rob Niemerg, Joyce Jackson, Julia Colombo and Janahn Kolden for participating in this program. Pictured are a few of the students demonstrating their art bags!

The Mattoon Arts Council has awarded summer arts camp scholarships to seven students.
Mattoon Middle School students Terry Colombo and Mara Keniley-Browning and Mattoon High School student Luke Noble receive scholarships to attend the EIU Music Camp.
Mackenzie Graham will attend Eastern Summer Art School and Sydney Camfield will attend EIU UDA Dance Camp. Both are MHS students.

A total of $6,000 was awarded from the Lebovitz-Lively Arts Scholarship Fund this year to Mattoon High School graduates majoring in visual or performing arts. This year scholarships were awarded to Katie Auer, who will attend EIU Band Camp, Hannah Retzer, Maia Huddleston, and Grace Bowen, who will all attend EIU English Studies Camp, and Mackenzie Graham and Jolie Osborn, who will both attend EIU Art Camp.
